The following is taken from the editorial section of the local newspaper in Rockingham.
"In order to save a considerable amount of money, Rockingham’s century-old town hall should be torn down and replaced by the larger and more energy-efficient building that some citizens have proposed. The old town hall is too small to comfortably accommodate the number of people who are employed by the town. In addition, it is very costly to heat the old hall in winter and cool it in summer. The new, larger building would be more energy efficient, costing less per square foot to heat and cool than the old hall. Furthermore, it would be possible to rent out some of the space in the new building, thereby generating income for the town of Rockingham."

time:unknow typos:unknow

The paragraph tried to persuvade its readers to believe that a new built modern town hall could save a substantial amount of money. Yet the reasons listed by the author are not persuvasive enough to convince people to vote for this idea.

The first thing it mentions is that the town hall is too small for the employees the the town has hired in the town hall. This could possibly lead us to doubt that the money mainly spent on the town hall is not on the site, but on the salary that paid to these over size staff. Thus maybe to cut the unnecessary man power is a better way to save money for the town.

The second reason about maitenance fee is reasonable at the first glance, yet after given a look in depth, there at least two things that this author hasn’t considered. One is that the cost of toring down the old buidling and replacing it with a new and larger one could be unexpectly high, which might possibly cover the maintenance fee for the old site for couples of years. That could make the replacement worthless regarding to the perspective of saving money. On the other hand, the editorial is proposing a much larger building than the old one. If it is efficient enough, the maintenance fee per square might be cheaper. The larger building, however, could cost more that old town hall simply because of the size. Plus, the town need to employ much more people for a larger mansion, and that also adds the totall cost.

Last but not the least, renting out the office of new building is a way of making profit, yet we are not aware of how easy could this business be conducted in this town. Yet as a century-old town hall, it’ll make much more sense to develop the site as a tourism point for the outsiders. The income of tourism could also generate income for Rockingham, and the margins might be even higher that building a new one and then renting it out.

To wrap up, the editorial need stronger surpport for the idea of town replacement plan, otherwise, cutting employees number and developing tourism resouce based on the historic build could be better ways to save money for Rockingham.

"It is always an individual who is the impetus for innovation; the details may be worked out by a team, but true innovation results from the enterprise and unique perception of an individual."

The origins of innovations, such as new things and ways doing things, are human minds. So it seems safe to say that the individuals are the impetus for innovation. Yet when considering real world situation, this is not quite the true story.

1 There are for sure innovations are accomplished by indivisuals. In area of painting and scuplture, for exmple, artists are the key of innovation. All the inspirations come from the individual who has the image of what he\she is doing in his mind. Not to mention writing, music composition and other alike areas. In science, some of the breakthrough theories are also indivivual works.

2 Yet these fields share some similarities. Fisrt these kinds of work can be possibly accomplished by a single person. What’s more, activities like painting or scientific theory research largely reply on indiviuals’ own inteleual work, not team work.

3 However, there is another level of innovation, which requires far more than a single person’s inspitraion and hard working.

4 Examples, fiction writing v.s. screen writing. Programming v.s software engineering.

A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic fatigueand 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly, Asians, onaverage, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out that soy contains phytochemicals called isoflavones, which have been found to possess disease–preventing properties. Thus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression.

outline:

1 The diet difference is just one of the many possible reasons that cause the different rate of such disease between Asians and North Americans.

2 Even the diet is the main reason, there are lots of food, eaten by Asian people everyday, never appears on the menus of recipes of North Americans.

3 What’s more, suppose that the soy, along with the phytochemicals called isoflavones it contains, indeed help the Asian people to prevent the depression, no evidence is shown that the same thing would work among the North Americans.

So, it is not a safe conclusion drawn at the end of this argument.

"Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time."

Time: >1hr, Spelling Errors: < 10

Imagine you were a farmer living with other farmers in the middle of Oxfordshire 200 years ago, and one day there comes a man with a stack of paper with lines, images and figures that absolutely means nothing to you and your fellows on it, telling you that there must be a way to make a huge machine out of iron, powered by fuel, that will take you and your families to a place called China on the other side of the globe in 9 hours. What will you say about this idea and what will you do to this guy? “Totally out of his/her mind” might be the slightest reaction. But this brave man is telling the truth, it is just that the truth is so hard to be accepted at that time.

There has been so many times on the history that important truths appearing as a <s>rediculous</s> job and laughed, even fiercely attacked, by the rest of the world. the man who think weight won’t affect the falling speed of an object had to throw two metal balls from the top of a tower to prove he was right; the theory of continents are giant floating board on the surface of earth was treated as dream talking at the first; and the person who told that the earth is not the center of the universe was burnt to death. Even in the last ten years of 20th century, people who though internet could be huge and hot were laughed by Bill Gates and the Microsoft <s>empire</s> behind him. We have to ask why – what is the reason that makes the truths, especially those really important truths contributed a lot in the human history, so unacceptable at the time when they were born.

<s>Fitstly</s>, sometimes the truth itself hurts. You must admit lies are more welcomed by us and this is buried in human nature. It is not to say that we human like lying, yet it is true that most of us will avoid to tell truth when we think it is not <s>a apropriate</s> time to speak it out. How many times have you pretend to enjoy tasteless pasta just because it was made by your friend? How many times did you have to say “well it looks perfect on you” when friend showing you their new bought hat, which actually looks like several piece of distorted cloth? And why would people do that? Because we know that sometimes the truth hurt, we need to not tell it to survive.

And when it comes to things like “the earth is a globe”, it hurts most, and people just choose not to believe or laugh at it, since when this kind of truths newly come out, they are always against some sort of “common sense”, which might has been wrongly existing for hundreds of years. To tell people this kind of reality is like to destroy part of their world. What’s more, these important truths are always far more advanced concerning either with science or some other areas, people just can’t understand them. They are so different ideas that people could not believe. It is the same as the reaction you’ll receive when telling a kid that Santa Clause is actually their parents.

And imagine the rest of the world all believe in Santa Clause and the gift thing, you are the only one who is aware that this is all fake, will you be brave enough to say? That is the third reason why some truths begin as outrageous – there are only a few people who knows it at first. They are weak; they cannot sound as loud as the rest of world can. Even if they can reason the truth perfectly, there is no way to widely spread their voice, especially in the old time. When lies are repeated millions of time by millions of people, they are strong enough to defeat the truths.

Yet, this sort of important truth telling and hurting thing is fading, partly because of the raised education level, partly because of the methods of communication becoming so various and powerful, which makes information reaching people easily and fast. And the most important thing is that protecting different thoughts and ideas gradually becomes a new global “common sense”. With this improvement and progress, we shall see that those astonishing truths will have more chances and easier to be accepted by the world.

"In any profession—business, politics, education, government—those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."

Time: > 1 hr, Spelling Erros: 5

Although revitalization is indeed a must path for any enterprise, it yet absolutely doesn’t ensure the success of an organization. Those who are in power are after all human beings, they get aged and head to the same end as other people do. So any business entity on the earth, no matter it is a company or a government, will go through the process of leadership level re-arrangement. However, only some of them can survive it, fewer become successful, and a lot more vanish after the revitalization. And in some certain circumstances, things look even better when a outstanding leader stays in the key position for a long time.

The Apple Inc. is such a perfect example. In early 80’s last century, Steve Jobs and his partner established the company, and it soon became a star in the personal computer market. However, in late 80’s Steve was fired for some reasons by his own company, which perfectly fits what is described in the quoted claim. However, the company’s business went down like a <s>temprature </s>meter in the winter of Alaska. The revitalization didn’t bring Apple to a higher submit, it was the other way around. Yet in the late 90’s, Apple called Steve back, and in the following ten years, he remained in the corporation as CEO, leading Apple to be reborn as the most successful IT company in the first ten years of the new century. No one could tell if the revitalization didn’t occur at all, what a monster Apple would have become now.

On the other hand, Apple now is also facing problems. The great CEO’s health condition is dropping, and many observers’ <s>attiditude</s> is <s>negtive</s> when asked what if the post-Steve time finally comes, since Steve has proved that he is such a vital role to the company that it seems no one else can take his place. This worry is more than reasonable, if a company, or other enterprise, replies on a certain individual – sometimes a small group of individuals – too much, people would have enough reason to say the future of this organization is unclear.

In contrary to the Apple, the other IT giant, Microsoft, acted quite smoother when Bill Gates quitted from the CEO position to the chief technology officer, and finally got rid <s>off</s> the company, dedicating to the charity business. Microsoft might be not as creative as Apple, however, it surely has a much better management style in the state of art.

And that leads us to the real answer to the question between the revitalization and the organization. The <s>buttom</s> line is to ensure the full capable person in the correct position at the right time; meanwhile, the body needs a well designed <s>personel</s> system to keep the danger of personality cult out of the door.
